Get Expert Pumping Services for Your Next Project

As leading commercial concrete contractors for close to 60 years, The Conco Companies deliver to each project a level of unsurpassed expertise.  Our vast scope of services allows us to offer clients concrete solutions that consistently meet deadlines and remain on budget.  Services include quality concrete design, formwork, reinforcement, finishing, shotcrete and construction hauling.  In addition Conco has owned and operated one of the largest concrete pumping companies in the United States for more than 40 years.

Take a look at our website to see some of the outstanding examples of our range of pumping services.  We are extremely proud of our accomplishment of breaking the world record for the largest continuous mat pour on the Wilshire Grand Center that is under construction in L.A.  The massive mat pour required a fleet of 208 trucks that each made 10 to 14 concrete drops for a total of 2,100 trips over the duration of the 18 ½ hour pour that created the nearly 20 foot thick mat foundation.  Additionally fifteen boom pumps, two high-pressure stationary pumps, two placing booms, and more than 2,500 feet of pipe operated throughout the pour to get the concrete to the foundation.

Our portfolio also includes successfully dealing with challenging project requirements such as a small footprint with minimal lay-down area and a quick timeline.  We were tasked with a five-day form cycle that required constant communication and coordination with all trades on site. As such, Conco utilized a perimeter protection system and perimeter netting system to ensure the aggressive schedule was met without jeopardizing the workplace.

Another example of our willingness to improve efficiency is when we helped to design and purchase two brand-new Schwing M36/31 concrete pumps. These remarkable pumps give us the ability to lift long tremmies into caissons without the need for a crane assist, and the compact roll and fold design of the boom does not interfere with typical drilling operations.

The Conco Companies are the foremost supplier of concrete services for the Western U.S. We have built a reputation on superior concrete formwork, reinforcing, place and finish, shotcrete and other ancillary services that benefit from our vast experience.  Conco’s concrete services include commercial, educational, parking and other construction development along with public works projects.

Earthquake Retrofitting – L.A.’s Tough New Building Code

Both the Wilshire Grand Center in Los Angeles and the Salesforce Tower in downtown San Francisco are currently under construction in areas known for seismic activity.  As such, the skyscrapers will be built utilizing the most high-tech earthquake modeling and engineering techniques available.  For example in the case of the Salesforce Tower, the building design was put through a series of 22 computer simulation tremblors that were modeled on real earthquakes that took place in the Bay Area.  The design passed all of the tests including a simulation of the 1906 earthquake that was estimated to be in the 7.6 range.

In early October, the L.A. city council passed the nation’s most comprehensive seismic regulations that will require approximately 15,000 buildings in the city to be retrofitted to better withstand extreme shaking from an earthquake.  The riskiest buildings targeted in the new ordinance were built before 1980.  They including brittle concrete buildings that are found along many of the major boulevards in L.A. and wood-frame apartment complexes built over carports.

The council’s decision was influenced by a study that reported over 65 people lost their lives in structures such as these in the 1971 and 1994 earthquakes.   L.A.’s mayor, Eric Garcetti was quoted in the L.A. Times saying, “Today's actions will save lives.”  He added, “I'm not interested in making history or having the toughest laws. I'm interested in preserving our city's ability to survive and thrive after an earthquake.”  Under the new ordinance, wood-frame structures must be earthquake retrofitted in five years and the retrofitting on concrete structures will have to be done over the next 30 years.

The Conco Companies are a leading supplier of concrete services for the Western U.S.  We got our start in the Bay Area in 1959 by offering clients the best value on a wide range of concrete services and products.  Since that time, we have taken a leading role as one of the top concrete contractors in the region. We have four regional offices serving California, Nevada, Washington, Oregon and Colorado.

Contemporary Architectural Feats Using Concrete

Photo by Timothy Hursley

The Conco Companies are busy working on several towering skyscraper projects that are sure to become renowned landmarks for the region such as the Wilshire Grand Center in L.A. and the Salesforce Tower in S.F.  Today’s high-tech concrete designs have allowed many modern feats of engineering to be constructed across the globe.

One of those amazing projects is the Marina Bay Sands Resort in Singapore.  This enormous (38-acre) mixed-use project opened in 2010 and includes hotel, retail, convention center and entertainment venues.  Designed by Moshe Safdie, the stunning hotel consists of three 55-story towers that are connected at the top of the buildings (656 ft.) with the 3-acre, 107,000 square foot Sands Skypark.

The park includes a public observatory, jogging paths, gardens containing 250 trees and 650 plants, restaurants, and lounges as well as the world’s largest infinity swimming pool at this height.  At 1,115 feet long from tip to tip, the entire area is longer than the Eiffel Tower is tall.  In addition it cantilevers 213 feet beyond the towers to form one of the world’s largest public cantilevers.

The hotel is comprised of 2,561 rooms and is the largest hotel in Singapore and the 6th largest in Asia.   During the construction phase, one new hotel floor was built every 4 days, which made it the fastest pace for a development of this size in Singapore.  A unique feature of the project includes the three towers being built with sloping as well as straight legs.  The tower for hotel 1 has the steepest slope at 26 degrees and both legs were connected at level 23 to form a single building.

Another part of the Marina Bay Sands Resort complex that is visually noteworthy is the ArtScience Museum that was designed in the form of a lotus flower.  Known as "The Welcoming Hand of Singapore", each tip of the fingers has skylights to illuminate the curved interior walls.  Sustainably features of the Museum include harvesting and channeling rainwater from the center of the building into the reflecting pond at the lowest level of the building as well as recycling the water to use in the building’s restrooms.

Concrete Buildings from Across the Globe – The Ardmore Residence

Photo by Iwan Baan

Concrete is one of the primary materials used in the construction of many contemporary architectural projects being built worldwide.  It is a malleable, durable and versatile material that is used to make many of today’s feats of engineering possible.  Since The Conco Companies have been busy working on several skyscrapers in the Western U.S. that are sure to become iconic landmarks for their regions, we are doing several blog posts on other concrete marvels that have recently been constructed across the globe.

One such dramatic concrete building is the Ardmore Residence Skyscraper in Singapore.  Designed by Ben van Berkel of UNStudio architectural firm, construction was started in 2009 and completed in 2013.  The remarkable aspect of the building is not so much the height (445’ tall, 36 floors) but rather the elaborate facade that is comprised of “curved edges, deep recesses and sliced windows.”

The 58-unit skyscraper is designed to replicate organic forms found in nature as displayed by the curved, opaque concrete façade.  To ensure residents could take advantage of the spectacular city views, each apartment has large bay windows and double-height balconies. According to the architect, "The highly textural facade of the Ardmore Residence works in unison with the organization of the individual apartments, affording both extensive daylight to the unique residential spaces and panoramic views over the city of Singapore."

By repeating the elaborate façade pattern in intervals of every four stories, the building is provided with a formal rhythm to its silhouette.  The actual residential units do not start until the 8th floor and the base of the tower is filled with gardens, terraces and a private swimming pool.

Why You Should Consider Shotcrete

The shotcrete process involves pneumatically placing concrete and is a cost-effective alternative to traditional cast-in-place walls offering high strength, low permeability and high durability.  Also as it provides the same structural characteristics as cast-in-place walls, shotcrete can be used in a wide range of applications such as shear walls, retaining walls, architectural walls, slope pavement, and soil nailing.  Furthermore, because it eliminates the need for the forming process altogether, your project’s labor costs and time will be greatly reduced.

The application can be done as a wet or dry method and the process is often determined by availability of material and equipment, the site access and the preference of the contractor.  With the high-tech equipment available today, bond strength, compressive strength and durability are mostly the same regardless of whether wet or dry methods are used.

Additional benefits of shotcrete are that it bonds extremely well with most substrates and offers instant or rapid capabilities, which is why it is often used on complex forms and shapes.  Also just like traditional concrete, it can be enhanced with additives or admixture such as silica fume, fibers, air-entraining admixtures, and accelerators.

According to American Shotcrete Association, “shotcrete’s numerous benefits include:

·         Formwork savings of 50 to 100% over conventional cast-in-place construction;
·         Complex shapes require very little, if any, formwork;
·         Crane and other equipment savings or elimination;
·         Labor savings of at least 50% in repair applications;
·         New construction speed savings of 33 to 50%;
·         Speed of repair reduces or eliminates downtime;
·         Better bonding to the substrate, which enhances durability;
·         Adaptability to repair surfaces that are not cost-effective with other processes; and
·   Ability to access restricted space and difficult-to-reach areas, including overhead and underground.”

The Conco Companies are shotcrete specialists and can service jobsites that have extreme operating environments such as chemical plants, gas-fired electrical generators and hydroelectric plants.  We also have taken a leadership role in the developing field of sculpted shotcrete where our trained sculptors artistically use concrete as a canvas to make shotcrete walls that have structural integrity but are also aesthetically pleasing.  Contact us to learn more.
