How Often Do Homeowners Require Rooter Service and Pump-Outs?

Homeowners often encounter plumbing issues that require professional assistance to resolve. Two common services they may need are rooter service and pump-outs. Rooter service involves clearing clogs in sewer and drain lines, while pump-outs are essential for septic tank maintenance. Understanding how often these services are needed can help homeowners maintain their plumbing systems and prevent potential problems.

Rooter Service

Rooter service is a plumbing method used to remove clogs and obstructions from drain and sewer lines. Homeowners may need rooter service for various reasons, and the frequency can vary based on specific factors.

  • Regular Maintenance

Annual or bi-annual drain cleaning can help prevent clogs from forming in the first place. Regular maintenance can extend the lifespan of your plumbing system, reduce the likelihood of blockages, and ensure smooth drainage throughout your home.

  • Signs of Blockages

Homeowners should be vigilant for signs of potential clogs, such as slow drains, gurgling noises in the pipes, or recurring backups. If these issues occur frequently, rooter service may be required.

  • Aging Plumbing

Older plumbing systems are more prone to clogs due to wear and tear. Upgrading your plumbing system or investing in preventive maintenance can reduce the frequency of clogs.

  • Usage Patterns

Your household's usage patterns can affect the frequency of rooter service needs. Homes with large families or those that frequently entertain guests may experience more frequent clogs. Monitoring your plumbing system and addressing clogs promptly can help prevent them from becoming chronic issues.

Pump-Outs

Pump-outs are an essential aspect of septic tank maintenance, and the frequency of pump-outs depends on various factors. The average recommendation for septic tank pump-outs is every 3 to 5 years, but individual circumstances can vary.

  • Tank Size

The size of your septic tank plays a significant role in determining the frequency of pump-outs. Smaller tanks fill up more quickly, and larger tanks can go longer between pump-outs.

  • Household Size

The number of occupants in your home impacts septic tank usage. A larger household with more people using water and generating waste can fill up the tank faster.

  • Septic Tank Maintenance

Regular septic tank maintenance, such as bacteria additives and inspections, can help prolong the time between pump-outs. Proper care of your septic system can help maintain its efficiency and reduce the need for frequent pump-outs.

  • Local Regulations

Local regulations and health department guidelines may dictate how often septic tank pump-outs are required. It's essential to comply with these regulations.

By being proactive and considering the specific needs of your home and plumbing systems, you can effectively manage these services and ensure the smooth operation of your household's plumbing and wastewater management.

Rooter Service Can Resolve Problems with Slow Drains During Rainy Weather

Rainy weather brings much-needed relief and nourishment to the earth, but it can also cause a host of problems for homeowners, particularly when it comes to plumbing. One common issue that arises during heavy rainfall is slow drains. As water accumulates, it puts additional strain on the plumbing system, leading to blockages and reduced drainage capacity. Fortunately, professional rooter service can be a highly effective solution for resolving slow drain problems during rainy weather.

Clearing Blockages

One of the primary causes of slow drains during rainy weather is the accumulation of debris, leaves, and dirt in the drainage pipes. These blockages restrict the flow of water, leading to slow drainage or complete clogs. Rooter service involves the use of specialized tools, such as drain snakes or augers, to remove these blockages effectively. The flexible cable of a drain snake is inserted into the drainpipe where it dislodges the debris, allowing water to flow again.

Tree Root Intrusions

Another common problem during rainy weather is the intrusion of tree roots into underground drainage pipes. Tree roots naturally seek out sources of water, and if there are any cracks or leaks in the pipes, they can infiltrate the system, leading to clogs and slow drains. Rooter service utilizes advanced equipment, such as high-pressure water jets or root-cutting blades, to effectively remove tree roots from the pipes. High-pressure water jets can dislodge the roots and clear away any accompanying debris while root-cutting blades can sever the roots and prevent them from re-entering the pipes.

Pipe Inspection and Repair

During rooter service, professional plumbers often conduct a thorough inspection of the plumbing system. They may use specialized cameras that can provide real-time visuals of the interior. This allows them to pinpoint the exact location of any cracks, leaks, or deteriorating sections of the pipes. Once identified, the plumbers can recommend and perform necessary repairs, such as pipe relining or replacement, to address these issues.

Preventing Water Damage

Slow drains during rainy weather can lead to water backup and potential water damage in the home. Excess water can seep into basements and crawl spaces, or even cause structural damage. By promptly addressing slow drains, homeowners can prevent water damage and the associated costs of repairs. This proactive approach to resolving slow drain issues during rainy weather can provide homeowners with peace of mind and protect their valuable investments.

Rainy weather can bring about a range of plumbing problems, with slow drains being a common issue for homeowners. Rooter service offers an effective solution for resolving these problems and restoring optimal drainage. Whether it's clearing blockages, addressing tree root intrusions, inspecting and repairing pipes, or preventing water damage, rooter service ensures that the plumbing system that functions efficiently, even during heavy rainfall.

Top 5 Most-Requested Residential Plumbing Services

For homeowners, residential plumbing services fill a range of functions related to the home plumbing and sewer systems. Qualified plumbing contractors can handle everything from clogged drains to adding a full bath in the new home addition. They have the tools and experience for any residential project, including these frequently-requested services.

1. Home Plumbing Inspections

Home plumbing inspections keep you on top of potential problems, diagnose known issues, and keep your home plumbing in top condition. Household plumbing inspections are also commonly done before offering a property for sale. They may be tied to some home warranties to assure buyers of the condition of the home.

2. Drain Problems

Clogged drains and sewer services occur more often than any other type of residential plumbing services. Drains can become clogged with hair, grease, and other household debris, but they may also stop flowing because your sewer lines are aging, the septic tank needs to be emptied, and more. The exact cause of the problem may not always be what it appears, but experienced plumbing contractors will locate and repair the problem quickly.

3. Leaks and Odors

Unpleasant odors and spots that are perpetually wet are both potential indicators of a plumbing problem and often occur together. Leaks can be under toilets, beneath sinks and drains, or located along the sewer lines outside your home. Repairing leaks is very important because standing water-- even small amounts-- can cause your walls to decay, breed bacteria, and more.

4. Sewer Repair

Sewer lines are vulnerable to tree roots, seismic shifts, and excavation. Tree roots can be especially troublesome, and happen relatively slowly. You may not notice how much your drains have been slowing down until one day the strain becomes too much and the flow stops completely. Residential plumbers also perform sewer tie-ins that convert homes from septic systems to municipal sewer services.

5. Trenchless Sewers

Many homes are built in such a way that traditional trenches cause a lot of problems that have to be repaired along with the sewer line replacement. With trenchless sewer repair, the contractors only need to dig openings at each end of the section being repaired. When the job is done, they only need to rapport a couple of locations instead of a section of concrete crossing the entire area.

If you own a home, the day will come when something goes wrong with your plumbing. Unless you have the necessary skills and tools to fix it yourself-- including pulling required permits-- you are going to need the assistance of experienced home plumbing contractors. From on-demand hot water to septic services, your home plumbing contractors have you covered.

5 Things to Check During a Home Plumbing Inspection

Having a household plumbing inspection will help you prevent major problems caused by things like broken valves, clogged drains, and plumbing leaks. The inspection only takes a few minutes, and taking care of any issues it reveals will have the potential to save you thousands of dollars in renovation repairs further down the line.

1. Fixtures and Appliances

Your faucets, tubs, and other appliances need to be checked during a home plumbing inspection to make sure they haven't become loose. When a faucet set loosens up, it can cause the pipes leading to it to loosen as well-- or completely break. Similarly, your toilet will become unstable if the bolts attaching it to the floor are loose, often leading to leaks around the toilet base.

2. Plumbing and Valves

Symptoms of plumbing problems are not always visible. For example, pipes rattling in the walls are typically a sign of plumbing lines that aren't properly fastened inside the wall, allowing the pipes to shake and rattle when water flow is turned on or off. This may be a sign of age, poor workmanship, or related to valves that aren't fully opened.

3. Sewage Lines

Problems with your sewer lines range from things like a perpetually wet spot in your lawn, odors near drains, or sewer lines that aren't working at all. In some cases, your lines can be opened up by rooter service, but other situations require sewer line replacement. When that happens, it may be a good idea to consider trenchless sewer replacement to minimize potential problems and get the job completed faster.

4. Traps and Drains

If the traps under your tubs or sinks are clogged, they will prevent proper drainage. This can sometimes be corrected by the homeowner using a plumbing plunger, but some clogs will have to be loosened and removed using a plumbing snake. If you have drains that are flowing slowly or not at all, try using a plunger first then call for a plumbing inspection if that doesn't fix the problem.

5. Water Heater

Your water heater is a vital part of your plumbing system. Water heaters need to be replaced about every 20 years, but they may need minor repairs along the way. Replacing a thermostat or heating element usually takes only a few minutes, and repairs of this type are much more affordable than replacing a water heater with only minor problems.

When your plumbing inspection is done by a licensed plumber, repairs can usually be made right away, reducing the damages caused by leaks and allowing you to focus on other things. Compared to the damages that they prevent, plumbing inspections can save you a lot of time and money.

What is Rooter Service and Why Should It Be Done Professionally?

Rooter service is a broad term used to describe locating and repairing sewage problems. The resident can usually repair simple clogs, but more complicated problems should be left to experienced sewer contractors. These five types of sewage repair will help explain when and why rooter service is needed.

Plunging - Using a hand plunger to remove minor clogs is easy enough. Place the plunger firmly into the toilet drain and pump the handle down and up vigorously a few times. If there is already a lot of water in the bowl, you will see the toilet drain when the clog has been removed. If there isn't much water in the bowl, flush the toilet after plunging.

Snaking - A plumber's snake is a long insert that can be used in sewer lines to remove moderate clogs. Never place a snake directly into a toilet bowl because inexperienced rotation and force can cause permanent scratching of porcelain and other molded surfaces. The best solution is to call a plumbing service if you are unable to remove the clog with a plunger.

Tank Pumping - If your home has a private septic system, the tank should be pumped annually, or more often when necessary. Keep in mind, however, that having a septic tank pumped more often than 3 times in a year probably indicates a drain field problem. Continually pumping the tank may be an expensive stop-gap for symptoms of a more serious issue.

Drain Fields - When a drain field stops functioning correctly, it can prevent the septic tank from draining. Septic system drain fields will fail over time due to becoming clogged with material that hasn't properly biodegraded, tree roots, or accidentally driving across the drain field.

Sewer Pipe Repair - Sewer pipes can become clogged, crushed, or broken for a variety of reasons. Your plumbing contractors can use trenchless or trenched sewer repair when that happens. Depending on your location and the available access to the sewer lines, your plumbing service provider can advise you on the most appropriate solution.

Hiring a great contractor takes more than dialing the first number you come across. You should always verify that you are working with a company that is both licensed and insured and that the company has the experience and staff to get the job done right the first time and without dragging out the project. Licensing is required by law in California and indicates that the company has proven its knowledge and ability as required by local law.

5 Things That Indicate You Need to Schedule Rooter Service

When sewer lines begin to clog, there will be a variety of signs that rooter service is needed. Not all problems will have all of the symptoms, but if you notice any of the things listed below, getting your sewer lines checked is the first thing to put on your schedule.

  1. Standing Water

If there is a place in your home or yard that is always wet but shouldn't be, there is a good chance that you have some sort of plumbing problem. The problem could be a burst pipe, but a more common cause is that your sewer lines are clogged and rooter service is the place to turn.

  1. Unpleasant Odors

Sewage is not a pleasant smell, but it is a key indicator that there is a problem somewhere in your sewer lines. Whether you are noticing unpleasant scents inside the home or somewhere outside, the best way to deal with the situation is to have a home plumbing inspection to determine whether a rooter service needs to be brought in.

  1. Clogged Drains

Slow-flowing drains or those that no longer flow at all are a certain indication that something has gone awry with your sewer lines. This problem can also present itself as a perpetually wet spot in your home or yard. Because sewage can lead to serious health problems, a clogged drain needs the attention of plumbing services as soon as it can be arranged.

  1. Unusual Noises

Sewer lines can cause all sorts of strange noises when they become clogged. Gurgling noises are common, but you may also notice random sounds of water flowing, clunking sounds, or bubbly noises. Some plumbing noises are also attributed to things like loose pipes in the walls or a water heater that is about to fail, so it may be a good idea to schedule a plumbing inspection first unless multiple sewer symptoms are present at the same time.

  1. Inconsistent Water Levels

If the water level in your toilets seems to vary from one use to the next, it may be a sign that something is wrong with the sewer line. When this happens, you may also notice that the toilet is not flushing as completely as it should. In this situation, the lack of proper refuse removal often contributes to faster sewer failure.

Keeping your sewer lines clear and working properly is good for your plumbing and your family's health. If you encounter a situation where plunging the toilet does not correct, call a plumbing specialist as soon as possible because the problem is likely to get worse fairly quickly.

5 Popular Commercial Plumbing Services That Improve Your Bottom Line

All businesses can benefit from commercial plumbing services. Although it may not seem apparent at first, plumbing issues can cost your company sales, employees, and costly mistakes. Plumbing definitely affects your company's profitability in multiple ways, as underscored by these 5 examples of how plumbing affects more than the water at your location.

  1. Leak Repair

Repairing leaks is one of the most common business plumbing services. Water leaks can occur in many places throughout a commercial property. Pipes get broken, lines get accidentally damaged, faucets and hose bib valves go bad, and more. Leaks can be costly in themselves, but they also cause serious workplace hazards that range from slip-and-falls to respiratory illness related to mold and mildew.

  1. Appliance Replacement

In some types of business, the appliances take a lot of abuse. Water heaters are overworked, sinks get used roughly, hose bibs are pulled away from walls, and the list goes on. Poorly functioning restrooms have a negative impact on employee morale, may potentially contribute to health risks, and leave an unfavorable impression on clients and investors.

  1. Sensory Interference

Unpleasant odors, constant drips, and pipes banging around in the walls can be distracting for employees. This results in lost productivity, demands non-work-related tasking, and may create inaccuracies in sensitive activities. We have all experienced the distraction of a dripping sink at one point or another, but dealing with it on a daily basis can have negative influences on employee morale and performance.

  1. Business Expansion

Today's commercial building codes require sufficient restroom resources for employees, emergency showers and eyewash stations, and plumbing for fixed equipment operations and maintenance. Since plumbing expansions involve municipally permitted work, they can only be performed by licensed plumbing contractors.

  1. Plumbing Maintenance

In many cases, establishing a regular plumbing maintenance program improves productivity and reduces absenteeism, among other benefits. Typically, a plumbing maintenance program involves regular inspections of plumbing pipes, appliances, and facility upkeep such as replacing worn or broken fixtures and valves. This identifies problems before they can create major incidents, and some maintenance plans save money by including certain repairs in the maintenance program.

From advertising to warehousing, plumbing is necessary for any type of commercial enterprise. Independent research has shown that businesses with insufficient plumbing resources or malfunctioning equipment become vulnerable to everything from absenteeism to work-related illnesses. There are a lot of reasons for your company to keep on top of its plumbing systems, but the best reason is that plumbing affects your bottom line.

3 Water Heater Repair & Replacement Options And When Each Is Appropriate

If you are having problems with your water heater, you have a few water heater repair & replacement options to consider. You may be able to repair the existing unit, but beyond that, replacement options include replacing the existing tanked heater or having a tankless water heating system installed. Before you make a decision, take a closer look at the options available so you can make the most informed decision.

  1. Repair Existing Units

If your water heater is less than 10 years old, replacing worn or faulty components may be the most sensible option. Things like heating elements and water valves are relatively inexpensive and can be done in a few hours or less. The critical point is the age of the water heater because after around 10 years failures will become more common and the tank itself is subject to deterioration or the accumulation of water-borne debris.

  1. Water Heater Replacement

If your water heater tank is leaking or the unit is more than 10 years old, making repairs may be throwing good money away. A leaking tank cannot be repaired in a dependable manner, and older tanks are far more likely to suffer leaks related to internal rust or corrosion. Since the tank is inside insulation covered by an internal shell, the symptoms of a leaky tank may be nothing more than a puddle of water under or near the water heater.

  1. Tankless Water Heaters

If you are replacing your water heater, going tankless is worth considering. Tankless water heaters have a longer use-life, take up less space, and lower utility bills. Tankless systems provide instant hot water for sinks, showers, and appliances using an inline water heating system that is usually located close to the heated area. Under the counter, in the attic, or mounted in a closet are all potential locations for tankless water heaters, and additional heaters can be installed to deliver more hot water on a daily basis.

Tankless systems are also a simple way to increase the amount of available hot water for other reasons. A growing family, recent home renovations, or new hot water demands related to clothes or dish washing machines are among the reasons to have an auxiliary tankless water installed. You can install tankless water heaters in conjunction with existing systems, but replacing the old one with a fully tankless delivery method yields the best results.

If your water heater is leaking, you should have it inspected immediately. Water damage resulting from standing water will quickly become an expensive problem, so prompt repairs will save you a bundle.

Signs Your Water Heater Needs to be Inspected

The longer you live in your home, the more likely it will be that you need water heater repair & replacement. Tanked water heaters are only rated for 10 to 15 years of service before they begin experiencing problems. If your water heater is beginning to show its age, these are the signals that tell you it's time for a water heater inspection.

Water Leaks

A leaking water heater is often the first sign that your water heater needs to be inspected. Water heater tanks are made with a relatively thin skin of metal that will rust or corrode over time. The tanks must be replaced when leaks occur because the damage will continue to grow.

Discolored Hot Water

Discolored water is a side-effect of a water tank that is nearing the end of its usefulness. The coloration comes from rust, corrosion, and sediment in the tank. Discolored or odorous water from the hot water lines are definitely indicators that you have a water heater replacement in your future.

Mold and Decay

Excessive moisture in the area will eventually cause the growth of mold and mildew. Left uncorrected, this problem will spread and may affect the health of family members. Mold is frequently a sign of a small water leak that you haven't detected, but you will need a water heater inspection to know for certain.

Water Doesn't Get Hot

When the heating element in your water heater begins to fail, the temperature of your water may be cooler, warmer, or even fluctuate from one use to another. Similarly, the element is operated by a thermostat that may get stuck or stop working altogether. Either way, lukewarm water from the hot water tap is a sign that you should have the water heater inspected.

Low Hot Water Pressure

Low water pressure in your hot water lines indicates a blockage of some sort in the hot water system. This could be related to sediment in the tank, corrosive buildup in your water lines, malfunctioning valves, or other problems. Because this problem is a symptom of a variety of issues, scheduling a home plumbing inspection is the most efficient way to address the issue.

Nobody wants to replace their water heater, but it is a necessary task for homeowners. On the other hand, water heater replacement is a great opportunity to upgrade to a tankless system that provides hot water on demand, uses less water, and has a longer span of use.

Why You Should Keep Up with Drain Cleaning for Your Business

One of the most common problems encountered by commercial plumbing services are drains that drain slowly or fail to flow at all. Your best course of action is to have your drains checked and cleared as necessary by qualified plumbing technicians. Failure to maintain your drains can lead to a few different unpleasant conditions in your business, including the major issues described here.

Avoid Odors

Decomposing organic matter releases gases in your sewer lines that eventually escape into other parts of your business. This can be demoralizing for your employees, but it can also lead to dissatisfied clients who choose to take their business elsewhere. No one wants sewer smells in their offices and warehouses, and regular drain cleaning is the most common cause of them.

Prevent Water Damage

If drains don't get cleaned regularly, the line can become clogged, resulting in water that backs up in the toilet, bathtub drain, and sinks. When one of those fixtures overflows, extensive water damage can occur very quickly, leading to replacing floors, ceilings, and walls. Home remodeling is very expensive compared to the cost of a regular drain inspection routine.

Improve Employee Morale

Company plumbing problems can have a disastrous impact on the morale and productivity of your staff. Because drains are the source of a large portion of commercial plumbing problems, regular drain cleaning may be able to boost the productivity of employees or attract new clients who notice your restrooms are well maintained and view that as a positive aspect of your company.

Sanitation and Hygiene

Clean, freely flowing drains increase the sanitary conditions of your basins, tubes, and washrooms, This can be especially cost-effective when drain cleaning is weighed on breathing problems or other health concerns. The consequences of sick or unhappy staff members can be devastating, resulting in absenteeism, increased workplace confrontations, and more.

Maintenance Vs Emergency Repairs

Emergency plumbing repairs can be very expensive, especially when they happen outside of normal business hours. A better idea is to have your drains cleaned regularly, make sure your plumbing system is kept up-to-date, and repair faulty lines, leaky faucets, and other problems as soon as they occur.

The bottom line is that keeping your sewer lines in good condition improves productivity in the workplace, promotes communication and teamwork, and entices customers to shop longer, buy more, and stay interested. This may seem like a tall order for a simple task like flushing a drain or removing a clog before it overflows, but most plumbing issues start out as little more than a damp place on your lawn or unpleasant odors permeating your office space.

Why You Should Use a Tankless Water Heater

The debate over water heater repair & replacement sometimes misses the opportunity to upgrade to a tankless water heater. There are a few indications that it's time to replace your existing water heater, and installing a tankless system offers a handful of benefits that tanked water heaters can't provide.

Energy Savings

Energy savings is the immediate benefit of a tankless water heater. As the name implies, on-demand water heaters create hot water only when it is needed, eliminating the need for continuously heating a tank of water. Tankless systems reduce energy use by saving water, as well, because you aren't wasting water waiting for heat to arrive. In an average home, tankless water heaters can reduce energy use by as much as 36 percent, with the savings declining as usage increases.

Instant Hot Water

On-demand also means that when you turn on the valve you can usually expect hot water within a second or two. No more long waits for water that has gotten cold in your plumbing to be pushed out by water from the tank. Keep in mind, however, that families using more than about 46 gallons of hot water per day will see declining efficiency, and the distance from a tankless heater the water travels will delay delivery time.

Space Saving

Tankless systems are typically placed below a sink, in the attic, or some other place that allows tying into the existing hot water line. Since there is not a tank, the heater requires very little space and is mounted inline. And since you are eliminating that bulky tanked water heater, you are also regaining space inside the home that had been locked away since the home was born.

Longer Usefulness

Tanked water heaters are not built to last beyond about 12 to 15 years before components begin to fail or the tank itself springs a leak. Tankless systems have fewer components to malfunction and less risk of corrosion. This results in product life of around 20 years, with a much lower risk of leaks.

Manage High Demand

If your home does use more than 46 gallons per day, has periods of higher than normal demand, or you need to get hot water to specific locations faster, tankless systems are easily expandable. Your home plumbing contractors can install tankless heaters at the locations where they are needed most. So even if you have a lot of house or persistent guests, tankless systems can keep everyone happy in the shower.

Water heater repair & replacement is a serious home investment, and should never be performed by fly-by-night contractors who may not live up to your expectations. Always verify that you are dealing with home contractors that are licensed and insured, with years of experience in tackling home renovation and upgrades.
