Levi’s Stadium’s was the Place to Be for Super Bowl 50!

With 71,088 people attending Super Bowl 50, the San Francisco 49ers Levi’s Stadium did a great job hosting the game.  To commemorate the fact that this was the 50th Super Bowl, the NFL made a couple of changes to the look of the game.  One was to suspend the tradition of naming this game with a Roman numeral, which is an “L” for 50.  Instead the league chose to use the Arabic numeral 50.  They also used the color gold used to signify the “golden anniversary.” 

The game was watch by 111.9 million viewers to make it the third highest watched show in TV history.  Commercials during the big game, which was broadcast on CBS, cost an average $5 million for a 30 second ad.  Another hefty cost was the price of tickets on the secondary market.  StubHub, a leading ticket reseller, reports that the average price of a ticket was $5,134, with tickets varying from $1,222 for the cheapest to $27,983 for the most expensive.  The half-time show featured Coldplay and had special performances from Beyoncé and Bruno Mars. 

Although the actual Levi’s Stadium is located close to 50 miles away in Santa Clara, CA, the city of San Francisco created a “Super Bowl City” around the area of the Ferry Building.  It was opened on Saturday, Jan. 30 through Super Bowl Sunday.  The Ferry Building’s tower was decked out in a huge golden “50”.  As the area is known for its leadership in technology, it also provided an opportunity to “showcase the latest in interactive gaming, social media and data visualizations,”   Organizers expected more than a million people to attend. 

Speaking of technology, the Super Bowl 50 game set a record for using 10TB of data on Levi’s Stadium WiFi network.  This was a big increase from last year’s game, which used 6.2 TB of WiFi data.  Facebook was the most popular social app used during the game.

While Super Bowl 50 will be held at the Levi’s Stadium on February 7th, it seems like just yesterday that The Conco Companies’ crews were working hard to help construct the new home for the San Francisco 49ers.  In order to be eligible to host the 2016 Super Bowl, the stadium had to be completed and operational for at least two seasons before the big game.  That meant that Conco, along with the rest of Levi’s construction team were on an accelerated schedule to complete the project in time for the start of the 49ers 2014 season. 

Even though the 1.2 billion facility is one of the most technologically advanced stadiums every built, gearing up to host Super Bowl 50 is not easy task.  According to CBS’s CNET, the stadium has, “400 miles of fiber and copper cable and 1,200 Wi-Fi access points capable of handling a torrent of data, all so fans at the game can use the Super Bowl app to seamlessly order food by phone.” 

This means spectators should have plenty of bandwidth to post photos or to comment on the action through their favorite social media sites.  While other Super Bowl games in the past have experienced power outages, (think back three years ago to New Orleans) Levi's Stadium has 10 times the bandwidth mandated by the NFL at other stadiums including that of the AT & T Stadium near Dallas. 

One misstep thus far, which of course was recorded on social media, was when the grounds crew was preparing the field and ended up painting the Denver Bronco’s logo and team colors on the wrong end zone.  While the mistake was quickly fixed, it probably is a good thing that the Panther’s team colors are blue and black as to help hide any remnants of the Bronco’s colors.
