While The Conco Companies have successfully accomplished many significant feats during our decades in the industry, we have always put the safety of our workforce, our fellow trade partners, general contractors and the public first.  We are proud of our safety record and it is one of the first things we consider when undertaking a new project.

Safety has always been important in the successful operation of a concrete construction company.  At The Conco Companies, we understand that construction work presents many hazards. In addition to ensuring that all construction operations are performed in accordance with federal OSHA, WISHA, and local standards, we also go many steps above and beyond to protect our employees, partners and the general public.  

Safety Professionals

Conco employs a staff of safety and risk professionals. The job of these professionals is to work with the team to eliminate all construction and “over the road” risks.  This team can be found at our project locations carrying out frequent inspections, ensuring employee safety, and monitoring regulatory compliance.

To create the safest environment, Conco believes that each and every team member must be trained in hazard prevention and safety standards. Hazard prevention is the core of our safety program. With an entire team who can identify unsafe working conditions and potential work related accidents these hazards can be eliminated early or prevented entirely through individual responsibility and awareness. Beyond Conco

We ensure that our partnerships with contractors are based on a mutual understanding that we will employ the highest standard of safety on all project sites. All projects are provided with a Site Specific Safety Plan and Pre-Task Planning, Injury and Illness Prevention Plan (IIPP)/ Accident Prevention Program (APP), and training is provided to all on Fall Protection, First-Aid/ CPR, Forklift Operation, OSHA 30, Material Rigging, Traffic Control, and all other related areas. 

Drug and Alcohol Free

We have a strict drug and alcohol ban on all project sites. Additionally, we offer drug and alcohol prevention programs to eliminate the use and possession or drugs and alcohol in the workplace.

In the United States alone, there can be over 250,000 construction sites at any given time which employ over 6.5 million workers. Out of the over 150,000 worker injuries that occur each year, the most common accident on a construction site is a fall. Steps to Ensure the Wilshire Grand is Earthquake Ready

The Conco Companies have been in business for decades, and as such, have had the opportunity to provide concrete services on a broad range of commercial, educational, healthcare and public works projects as well as parking structures.  One very large and exciting project we are proud to be a part of is the Wilshire Grand Center, which when complete, will become the tallest building in the U.S. west of the Mississippi.  

The 73-story 1,100 foot skyscraper is located in Downtown Los Angeles and is right in the middle of a seismic hot zone with a fault less than a ½ mile away that has an estimated capacity for a 6.4 magnitude earthquake.  This means that even before construction began several steps had to be taken to ensure it was ready in the event of an earthquake. 

 

Much of the early work came in the form of the architectural and engineering design.  The Los Angeles-based architectural firm, A.C. Martin Partners, who prepared the current design and is overseeing the project designed the building with a garage and plaza that consists of five levels of 13-inch thick concrete floors.  This will work to “transfer lateral loads such as seismic activity or Santa Ana winds to the walls or frames” of the building.  

Another example of how the skyscraper was designed to protect it from seismic shaking is the construction of its core that consists of four-foot thick walls and contains steel-plate box columns filled with concrete.  The core will hold the building’s elevators and staircases.   Furthermore, an additional 10 columns are linked to the core.  These act as “structural shock absorbers to absorb the energy that an earthquake might produce.”

Before Conco’s historic, record setting continuous mat pour even took place in February 2014, the skyscraper’s design had been put through some of the most advanced and sophisticated earthquake modeling available.   After a series of numerous tests and studying damage from past earthquakes in Southern California, the engineers refined the size and depth of the foundation.   In addition they added devices called buckling-restrained braces.  These long steel bars are encased in steel boxes and filled with grout to allow the bars to compress or stretch when the building moves.
