In order to answer the question of
what is “green”, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has developed the LEED
rating system, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. It is used throughout the world to judge a
building’s sustainability and provides “a framework for identifying and
implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction,
operations and maintenance solutions.”
The USGBC states that LEED certified
buildings save money and resources and have a positive impact on the health of
occupants, while promoting renewable, clean energy. LEED certification is sought after by the
industry as a higher endorsement can help to increase a building’s market value. LEED-certified buildings are rated for energy
efficiencies in five basic categories that include: Sustainable Sites, Water
Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, and Indoor
Environmental Quality. Endorsements
include Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum, which is the highest award.
