What Does an ACPA Operator Certification Mean?

Concrete pumping is a key component of many large-scale construction projects, from highways and bridges, to skyscrapers and residences. Bay Area commercial concrete contractors often utilize concrete pumping technology, and therefore require a skilled workforce that is qualified to operate this machinery. The American Concrete Pumping Association has recognized the need to consolidate and make transparent the safety and operational practices of concrete pumping and provides a nationally recognized certification process for those who would operate concrete pumps. Pump operators who successfully complete this certification are assets to their teams, the contractors who employ them, and the customers who reap the benefits of their skilled work.

Who certifies concrete pump operators?

The American Concrete Pumping Association was founded in 1974 and seeks to promote, expand and improve the concrete pumping industry through progressive leadership, communication, education, and advocacy. This mission has led the ACPA to create the only  industry-recognized concrete pumping certification program for testing concrete pumping practices. The membership of the ACPA is composed of owners of concrete pumps, manufacturers of concrete pumps, and distributors of concrete pumps and accessories. It is an industry group heavily invested in the competent, safe, and efficient use of this important construction equipment.

What does a certification involve?

In order to be ACPA-certified to operate concrete pumps, a potential operator must complete a preliminarytraining and test that covers both safety and technical procedures, with addendums for particular types of equipment, such as for 50 meter and longer booms. Additionally, operators must log a set number of experiential hours, which depend on the classification of pumping certification they are seeking. There are separate classes for portable line pumps, large line pumps (or non-portable pumps), boom pumps, 50 meter and larger booms, and separate placing booms, each with their own requirements for time spent using the equipment in a work environment. With these two components in place, an operator can submit their test results and experience logs to receive the ACPA certification, with the requirement to reapply every two years to maintain their certified status. It is a valuable characteristic in a concrete team member, and one that commercial concrete contractors who utilize concrete pumping in the Bay Area  prioritize in their workforce.
