Conco’s work on the award-winning Salesforce tower in San Francisco

For this reason, Conco was contracted to provide concrete services for the construction of the Salesforce Tower in the South of Market district of downtown San Francisco. For their part, Conco placed 110,000 cubic yards of concrete with concrete pumping to create the massive skyscraper’s core interior walls and foundation. This project was the largest mat pour in San Francisco’s history, requiring 18 hours to complete. The monumental efforts of the building’s architects, engineers, construction teams, and Conco yielded stellar results, as the Salesforce Tower has gone on to receive multiple awards and recognition across the industry.

Built for height and strength

Completed in 2018, the Salesforce Tower is the tallest skyscraper in San Francisco at staggering 1,070 feet and 61 floors. The impressive tower is the anchor of a larger mixed-use development that features retail, residential, and other office buildings, as well as transportation facilities. The building site is located on top of an area of the city that is at risk of soil liquefaction in an earthquake and required creative engineering to reduce the seismic risk with a 14 foot-thick foundation mat with 42 piles driven into the bedrock 300 feet below. This design ensures the tower is able to withstand the strongest earthquake forecasted for the region.

Recognized for height and sustainability

Among the various awards and recognition of the project and the tower itself has received, the Salesforce Tower was recently named the best tall building worldwide by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH). CTBUH is a Chicago-based international nonprofit that hosts annual architectural awards that recognize “projects and individuals that have made extraordinary contributions to the advancement of tall buildings and the urban environment, and that achieve sustainability at the highest and broadest level.” The award committee praised the Salesforce tower for its human-centric design, LEED Platinum standard sustainability, structural efficiency, and its level of integration with the surrounding urban environment.
