Home Renovation Ideas: Interior Glass Doors

So many aspects of home renovation escape homeowners when they brainstorm. They don’t realize until it’s too late all of the possibilities they hadn’t considered. Before you put your plan into motion, think about the finer aspects of renovation, such as your interior doors. Are you going with regular solid wood doors, or does the sound of a residential glass expert designing decorative glass doors perk up your ears?

Here are a few reasons why interior glass doors are a great home renovation idea:

Create the illusion of more space

Imagine if you removed every wall in your home. Your floor space would seem larger, wouldn’t it? Imagine removing all your furniture as well, leaving nothing but clear floors. That would seem like a lot of space, though you did nothing but clear your line of sight. Now, you can’t remove everything in your house when you want it to seem spacious—and why would you?

Instead, you can play into the concept of “line of sight” by installing glass doors and creating the illusion of continuous floor space. Glass doors work great to separate communal rooms from the hallway, such as living rooms, entertainment rooms, home offices, and libraries. You can also install glass shower doors to allow sunlight into your bathing area. One thing you need to know before installing glass shower doors is they’re made of different glass than windows, so the appearance might not be as consistent if you prefer them to match.

Increase exposure to sunlight

If you have two adjacent rooms that don’t get equal sunlight, or one gets a lot more than the other, a glass door can spread out the light. This turns the glass door into a secondary window, funneling light between the rooms. Depending on the light flow, you might benefit from a door that is more glass than frame, or a door that has decorative glass patterns that warp the light. Textured and tinted glass can leave colorful patches of light drifting along the walls or floor as the sun rises and sets.

For bedrooms, you can have a tint applied to the glass to prolong your mornings for sleeping in. Or, you could have blinds or curtains installed on your exterior-facing windows so you can leave the bedroom window untouched. For privacy, you can add etchings or frosted glass to keep sunlight in and prying eyes out.

Spruce up your home design

Maybe your home doesn’t need sunlight flowing into more spaces. Maybe the sunlight is fine, but the design could use a designer’s touch. Interior glass doors can add that unique touch to your home, adding low-maintenance flair once it’s installed. Glass will only need to be cleaned on a routine basis, like anything else in your home, and will provide a stylish spot to delight your household and visitors.

For single glass doors, you can have a wide-frame glass section that features etchings, frosted designs, tinted glass, and more. If you have rooms with double doors, like an entertainment or bonus room, you have more room for creative design. A glass expert can create a “scene” or mural and use a variety of glass textures and designs.
