The Versatility of Concrete in the San Francisco Skyline

San Francisco is a city that features several distinct styles and trends in building design, from historic Victorian residences to modern high-rise buildings to revamped industrial multi-use spaces. The varied features of the diverse built environment of the city contribute in part to San Francisco’s famed character, and likewise, requires expertise from those building the ever-changing city and are up to the challenge of integrating new projects into the dynamic landscape. Beyond the challenge of incorporating the aesthetic of the project into the existing neighborhood or space, new projects in San Francisco also have the added challenges of being able to withstand the seismic activity of the area, as well as accommodating the iconic slopes of its steep hills. Given these considerations, it is logical that a key contribution to any project is that of an experienced commercial concrete contractor in San Francisco. Concrete is a versatile and foundational element in most projects, and its skilled mixing, placement, and finishing is essential to the strength and durability of the final product, as well as to the quality of the aesthetic finish.

St. Mary’s Cathedral

One prominent example within the San Francisco skyline of concrete’s versatility is the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption, known locally as St. Mary’s Cathedral. This building’s uniquely structured dome, a saddle roof made up of eight segments of hyperbolic paraboloids, was created with concrete. Seen from above, the roof is meant to take on the shape of a cross. The cathedral’s modern design has attracted accolades over the years, including from Architectural Digest, who named it one of the most beautiful churches in the nation and lauded the “sweeping concrete geometries” of its exterior.

350 Bush

Another project that skillfully integrates a new building into the storied landscape of the city is the 20 story high-rise at 350 Bush Street in the heart of San Francisco. The Conco Companies, a commercial concrete contractor, worked with Heller Manus Architects and general contractor Hathaway Dinwiddie to provide concrete services for the tower directly behind the San Francisco Mining Exchange, a location chosen in order to utilize the historic landmark as the main entrance to the tower. The newer construction incorporates the terra cotta facade and columns of the Mining Exchange building into its design concept, while the landmark was also renovated as a part of the project.
