How to Clean Your Glass Shower Doors and Walls

If your shower glass is littered with cloudy streaks and soap scum, don’t worry. Residential glass can be cleaned by following the routine below, possibly restoring your shower to a clean, sparkly state that looks great and prevents future buildup of bacteria.

Clean your Shower Glass Daily...

The best time for the daily clean is immediately after the shower is used, because the grime and scum will be loosened by the water and steam. After the last person uses the shower for the day, rub the glass shower doors and walls with a squeegee, then finish by spraying with a no-rinse cleaner and leaving the door open to air dry.

If you don’t like leaving cleaner on your walls, you can use a DIY or commercial cleaner after squeegeeing. When using a commercial cleaner, make sure to follow the steps. If you’d rather use a DIY cleaner, two common cleaners are lemon- and vinegar-based.

For a homemade vinegar cleaner, mix one-part heated distilled vinegar with one-part grease-fighting dish detergent. Pour into a spray bottle, then spritz your shower glass. Wait 30 minutes before rinsing with water and a sponge, then drying with a microfiber cloth.

For a lemon cleaner, you can halve a lemon, dip it in baking soda, and rub it into the glass. Alternatively, you can mix one-part lemon juice with one-part water. Pour into a spray bottle, then spritz your shower glass. Wait 10 minutes before rinsing and drying.

Weekly...

In addition to the daily clean, give your shower a thorough wipe with a sponge at least once a week. Remember to leave the shower door open to air dry, or you’ll trap moisture that can cause scum to build up.

And Monthly...

Approximately every 30 days, you should use a toothbrush, paint scraper, and/or razor blade scraper to get into the deeper, harder to clean areas.

Toothbrushes are great for the creases between glass pieces, including the junction of your shower door and its frame. The scrapers can get at the gunk between the door and its frame, and when angled at 45-degrees, can gently scrape hardened mineral deposits off the glass surface. Be careful not to scratch the glass. Glass can be costly to repair.

...until it’s time to replace!

Diligent cleaning can keep your shower glass clear and sparkling, but glass doesn’t last forever. Eventually your cleaning will yield less impressive results. If your shower glass is still grimy and streaked with stubborn scum after a deep wash, it might be time to contact a residential glass expert to install new glass

Even if you don’t mind your glass looking streaky, you shouldn’t settle with it. Soap scum can trap bacteria that’ll wash onto you in a warm shower, the opposite of what you want when you wash up. If your shower is beyond cleaning, how well do you think you’re cleaning yourself?
