The Best Windshields to Fit Your Budget

The Best Windshields to Fit Your Budget-auto glass replacement-Dans Glass.jpg

Most cars last an entire life of ownership without auto glass replacement. Even if their windshields get damaged, the glass can often be repaired quickly and with minor costs. However, some cars are inflicted with major damage that requires replacement, such as shattered/cracked glass from accidents and flying highway debris.

If your windshield is damaged enough to require replacement, you can choose from multiple options to best fit your budget and needs. There are three common types of windshield glass replacements, and this post will help you determine the best choice to bring up with auto glass replacement contractors.

Aftermarket Glass

Aftermarket glass is the least expensive windshield glass, and isn’t recommended for long-term fixes. It’s made by glass makers who don’t have any affiliation with car manufacturers, so they’re legally prohibited from using the same specifications. This means windshields aren’t made to fit your specific car model. In the long-term, aftermarket glass can void your car’s warranty, reduce its resale value, and put you in the market sooner for a full-service auto glass replacement.

If you’re in need of an affordable fix ASAP, aftermarket glass might be your best choice until you have the cash for a more reliable and permanent fix.

Original Equipment Manufactured (OEM) Glass

Original Equipment Manufactured (OEM) glass is manufactured with the same specifications of your car’s original windshield, and is sometimes made by the same glass makers of the original windshield. This doesn’t make it an exact replica, but it’s as close to an original fit as you can get without paying the high price. To install OEM glass, you can have your windshield replaced at a dealer or auto glass replacement company, but it’s generally more affordable to go through a local company. This makes OEM an ideal choice for a balance of affordability and quality.

Dealer Glass

Dealer glass is the preferred option for car owners because it’s the same windshield glass that was installed in your car when it was manufactured. It’s considered a “glass slipper” fit for cars because it’s made specifically for your car model, and is best for preserving warranties because it’s approved by your car manufacturer. To install dealer glass, you’ll need to get a windshield replacement through your local dealer, which makes this replacement option one of the more expensive types. Despite the price, dealer glass is the ideal choice if your budget can accommodate it.
